Mythsinger StoryNight! - October 2024, 2:00am PST session
On Weds Oct 15th one of the great ancient myths will be told!
We meet around the Zoom "Virtual Hearth" to listen as Daniel Deardorff (1952-2019), one of the finest mythtellers of his time, beams in from the Mythsinger archives. Your hosts Judith-Kate Friedman and Audrey di Mola will bring live music and poetry. Everyone in need of a story is welcome.
Myths hold wisdom distilled over millennia. They help us navigate the foibles of life: love, desire, treachery, oppression, heroism, and grief. Mythic tricksters teach us to live in connection with the Living World, with kindness, humor, cunning, and grace. They deepen our sense of what it means to be human, animal, and victoriously alive. Daniel Deardorff brought these Oral Tradition stories to life like no other mythteller of his time. As we sit together in circle after the story is told, we feed the story, each other, and the mythteller with our insights, questions, and gratitude. Join us!

The Other Within on the Magickal Solution podcast ~ Talking about myth, spirit and healing wounds in ourselves and society as we also celebrate mythsinger Daniel Deardorff on the date of his birth!
On Sunday Feb 12, 7pm Eastern, 4pm Pacific - the day Daniel Deardorff was born - Lailani of The Magickal Solution podcast talks with Judith-Kate Friedman about his book, The Other Within: The Genius of Deformity in Myth, Culture and Psyche. How can myths - the ancient stories - support us to address Otherness, and the experience of being “othered”? How does living mythically and ritually help us heal wounds of racism, classism, able-ism and other oppressions? Amidst great division, violence, and grief, how can myth re-awaken us to a whole-hearted way of living, re-connecting with our true selves and in concert with the Living World?
Myth and Memory in Community: A Year-End Online Storytelling Celebration
Featuring Creation Stories from Many Lands and Re-Kindling Daniel Deardorff’s Olympic Peninsula Tradition for Entering the New Year with music by Judith-Kate Friedman and ASL interpretation by Annie Clark.
Myths awaken memory and stir our senses with sound, rhythm, story, and image allowing us to recall the ancient resonances of Oral Tradition tales that have been gifted from generation to generation for tens of thousands of years. On December 29th, 2022 from 7-9pm PST, the Mythsinger Legacy Project (MLP) re-kindles mythsinger and storyteller Daniel Deardorff’s annual year-end community custom of sharing three very different Creation myths: one Norse, one Sumerian, and one from the Toba of South America.
Each story will unfold truths about need, renewal, loss, sacrifice, possibility, courage, beauty, and love. Each will open the imagination, showing us ways to re-member and re-store ourselves and our love and care for humankind and the Living World. The online magic of the Zoom platform will allow us to come together around the virtual hearth from near and far to hear Daniel Deardorff, albeit posthumously. Although he “flew out of this story into the next” in 2019, Deardorff’s music, his storytelling and his voice via a live recording will give all who are present an opportunity to hear the man who the poet Robert Bly called “a true inheritor of Joseph Campbell” and of whom the mythologist Martin Shaw said “Deardorff was the greatest storyteller I ever saw.”
The event will be held on Zoom, tickets are available at Eventbrite. Advanced registration is encouraged, all ages are welcome. Suggested donation is $20-$45 sliding scale, no one turned away for lack of funds.
